The layout here is a 7×7 formation, with a cluster pays feature replacing the 20 paylines of Sugar Rush. In addition, the default Return To Player rate is a massive 96.00%, far greater than the average slot RTP. Watch out though, as this might be lower at a handful of online casinos.

Theme & Graphics in Sugar Twist

The background depicts a pinkish fantasy world of candy-coated hills, with dispensing machines either side of the reels. One of these devices, immediately to the left of the grid, functions as the collector for tumble wins. 

There’s not much excitement in terms of the slot’s symbols. But Pragmatic Play opts for fish iconography here, unlike the teddy bear illustrations found in Sugar Rush, or the hard candies of Sweet Bonanza. Finally, the accompanying ice cream truck-style music fits in perfectly with the overall theme and gameplay.

Regular Symbols

All base game symbols in Sugar Twist are candies, but they’re different shapes, colors and designs. The higher-paying symbols are pink lollipops, orange heart-shaped sweets, purple jelly beans and green star candies. In order, you’ll earn payouts of 300x, 200x, 120x or 80x for 15+ clusters. 

Various fish-shaped candies are the lower-paying icons. They come in red, purple and orange colors. Landing a cluster of 15 red fish returns 60x, while it’s 50x and 40x apiece for the purple and orange varieties.  

Wilds

Unlike most online slots, there is no wild symbol in Sugar Twist. Happily though, you’ll barely notice this omission, since payouts start from clusters of just five symbols, which is pretty achievable. 

Scatters

A large green and orange twister candy serves as the slot’s scatter. This can appear on all reels, with at least three triggering the free spins bonus feature. 

Tumble Feature

If a winning cluster hits, the symbols involved will disappear, with new icons dropping down to fill the empty spots. If a new win emerges from this tumble, the process continues until no new clusters are formed.  

Multiplier Spots

After each tumble, the position of a random symbol from the winning cluster is marked. If the next cluster formed involves this marked spot, a 2x multiplier will be awarded. Subsequent winning symbols on the same spot cause the multiplier value to keep doubling, up to a maximum of 128x. Better still, multiple positions can be marked, and this rule applies to all applicable spots. 

These multipliers are applied to any winning clusters that land in their positions. If more than one multiplier is present, the values are added together before being applied.  

Free Spins

Landing between three and seven scatters triggers 10, 12, 15, 20 or 30 free spins. Unlike in the base game, where they are cleared after a tumble series ends, multiplier values remain on the reels throughout the free spins round. If three or more additional scatters appear, the free spins are retriggered.

The Sugar Twist Review – Our Final Verdict

If our Sugar Twist review was released earlier than May 2023, you’d be forgiven for thinking we’d accidentally played Sugar Rush instead. The similarities are so striking, it appears that Pragmatic Play has simply slapped a different name on the same slot. 

However, the massive boost in the RTP is arguably one of the best additions to any release in recent times. While the switch from paylines to a Cluster Pays mechanic makes for a very different feel, even if the look is almost identical. 

In truth, we’d have preferred to see the maximum win potential increased from 5,000x too. After all, this is a highly-volatile slot. That would have probably led us to rate Sugar Twist even more highly. Still, you can’t have your candy and eat it too.
