This 2011 follow up to Da Vinci Diamonds retains many of the original’s signature features and mechanics, as you’ll soon discover. 

The action plays out on a 5x3 reel grid with 40 paylines. You can spin from $0.04 per play, a relatively high minimum stake, while the maximum bet reaches a healthy $400.

A low level of volatility is paired with an equally below-average RTP of 94.90%. However, the maximum potential payout of 5,000x is a fairly attractive prize, especially considering the game’s age.

Theme & Graphics in Double Da Vinci Diamonds

Classical art isn’t the most common of slot themes, but the Da Vinci Diamonds series has really gone to town. This particular release is just the second in a sizable series from High 5 Games. These games put a new twist on the legendary artist’s most famous works, including Mona Lisa and Lady with an Ermine.

The game’s premium symbols are based on some of Leonardo’s best-known works of art. However, these symbols often land in split form, meaning you’ll see two in the same position. This leads to greater payouts. 

For example, Lady with an Ermine pays up to 750x the line bet for ten on a payline. With just five reels, that couldn’t be possible without split symbols.

In addition, Portrait of the Musician returns from 10x to 1,000x for three to ten symbols, while Mona Lisa is the game’s highest-paying symbol. She returns up to 5,000x for ten.

Wilds

The Double Da Vinci Diamonds game logo acts as a wild symbol in this slot, replacing all others except for the scatter. It can only land on reels two, three and four.

Scatters

The predominantly purple “Free Games” symbol is the game’s scatter. Three of these trigger the Free Games Bonus, where you’ll receive between six and 16 free spins. 

One the free spins bonus is underway, these redundant symbols become additional wilds.

Tumbling Reels

This feature remains active during both the Free Games Bonus and the base game. As winning combinations form, those symbols are removed, allowing new ones to fall in and replace them. This can lead to potentially rewarding chain reactions.

Double Da Vinci Diamonds Review – Our Final Verdict

The Da Vinci Diamonds series was very popular back in the day, but it’s hard not to view these games through a modern lens. The first impression is not good at all, thanks to some appallingly dated graphics. You have to feel that Leonardo himself would be offended at the crude renditions of his all-time classic works of art. 

Once you get over that, the game itself is quite uninspiring. I tried turning up my speakers at first, before realizing there just wasn’t any music at all. 

In terms of gameplay, the split symbols definitely do add something, and that would have been considered highly innovative back in 2011. But those aside, it’s a straightforward grind through to a standard free spins bonus.

The extra wilds during the feature are definitely good to see. But I don’t particularly appreciate plodding through a dull base game, only to sometimes be rewarded with just six free spins. 

Overall, this one isn’t for me. If I were going to play a game of this ilk, I’d try one of the later releases in the series. However, it’s important not to forget just how old this game is.
