With this Banana Town review, we’ll head back in time to a Donkey Kong-inspired golden age of gaming. We’re not just referring to the retro 8-bit graphics of this slot, either. It features a monkey mafia kingpin, who could easily be based on the beloved Nintendo character, plus his gang of simian goons.

Banana Town Details, RTP and Volatility
First of all, let’s be clear that this Banana Town review deals with the original July 2022 release. In April 2023, the game was added to Relax Gaming’s Dream Drop series of progressive jackpot slots, coming in for a remake as a result.
This version of the game offers a healthy maximum potential payout of 10,000x per spin, plus a solid RTP of 96.12%. It’s highly volatile and relies on a scatter-paying mechanism, instead of the usual payline system. Finally, it’s possible to spin the reels from just $0.10 per play, with an upper betting limit of $100.
Theme & Graphics in Banana Town
As we alluded to at the beginning of this Banana Town review, the game’s designers were clearly aiming for a retro 8-bit vibe. The graphics are extremely basic, but intentionally so, and it’s obvious that Relax Gaming are fans of 80s video games. After all, this isn’t their first game created in this style. Take Hellcatraz, for instance.
Aside from the visuals, which seemingly boast more colors than pixels, there’s also a catchy electronic soundtrack to enjoy. The various sound effects you’ll hear throughout the game could easily be lifted straight from one of the early Sonic or Mario games. It all adds up to really make you feel like you’re playing an old-school arcade game.
Banana Town Slot Features
Let’s now take a deep dive into the various bonuses, features and mechanics of Relax Gaming’s Banana Town slot.
Regular Symbols
There are nine ordinary symbols in this game, starting with four bunches of brightly-colored bananas. All of these pay 0.5x for landing eight or nine of the same color, with 1x awarded for hitting ten or eleven. However, the yellow and red ’nanas pay slightly more for matching 12. You’ll receive a 3x reward, compared to the 2x from the blue and green.
The better-paying symbols are the monkey mobsters, headed by the cigar chomping kingpin himself. He pays up to 12x, compared to the top prizes of 6x and 4x offered by his goons.
Wilds
There is no wild symbol in Relax Gaming’s Banana Town slot. A scatter-paying mechanism is used, rather than clusters or traditional paylines.
Bonus Symbol
The final symbol is a yellow dollar sign on a red background. Dubbed the “Bonus Symbol”, this is effectively a scatter. Three or more are required to access the free spins bonus.
Cascades
Every time a win is paid, the winning symbols are wiped from the grid. This paves the way for more to fall in from above, potentially triggering further combinations.
Multiplier Upgrade
To the right of the grid is a list of the game’s various symbols, each with a x1 multiplier beside them. Should you achieve a win, the multiplier of the symbols involved will double to x2. A further win would see them double again to x4, up to a maximum potential multiplier of x64.
At the beginning of each spin, any number of these multipliers could randomly be upgraded to a higher figure, giving you a head start.
Free Spins
Hit three Bonus Symbols during the base game and you’ll earn eight free spins. For every additional triggering symbol, one extra spin is awarded. That is also true once the feature is underway, with extra spins handed out for each Bonus Symbol landing on the reels.
Once triggered, the monkey characters head inside the clubhouse and the backdrop changes. The boss is now seated at his desk, beside a huge pile of bananas. However, the switch of scenery is purely cosmetic, and the rules of the feature are essentially the same as the base game.
The only significant difference is that any multipliers acquired will be retained into the subsequent spins. In addition, the feature will begin with any multipliers from the triggering spin still active.
Buy Feature
Don’t feel like waiting around for the bonus to trigger organically? You can simply pay 100x to the monkey bouncers guarding the door of the club.
How to Play Banana Town Online
There’s not much to Banana Town other than its scatter mechanism. So, rather than dropping symbols onto fixed lines, you’ll win if they appear anywhere on the 6x5 grid. A minimum of eight is required to earn a prize, while three Bonus Symbols will trigger the free spins feature.
Use the plus and minus icons in the bottom-left corner to adjust your stake, before hitting the curved arrow to spin. Use the double triangle “fast forward” icon to speed up your gameplay, or the single “play” button to configure as many automatic spins as you like.

Banana Town Review – Our Final Verdict
We really liked this slot. It’s easy to understand, first of all, with no overly-complex features. But it definitely triggered a pang of nostalgia for a time when video games were much simpler, yet somehow more addictive.
It’s also filled with goofy touches, like the monkey bouncers playing with yo-yos and throwing bananas at each other. We know it’s silly and childish, but it’s just funny, and very much in keeping with the light-hearted vibe the game gives off.
It’s certainly not an original idea to create a slot that seems like a 1980s video game. Nevertheless, the developer has done a good job replicating that feel, while also providing a game that slots fans of all bankrolls will enjoy.
